This Friday (26th April 2024) Dunraven Secondary School hosted its second annual Multicultural Day celebrating the diversity within our school. The day allowed students and teachers alike to celebrate their different cultures and heritage and be proud of their identity.

The diversity of Dunraven reflects the diversity of Lambeth and, because our school community is made up of so many cultures, life at Dunraven is so enriching. The day allowed students to show off outfits representing their culture, from traditional attire to sports shirts and flags. There was a face painting station, "Guess the Flag", and different departments representing different countries and regions around the globe. The Science department represented South Africa in memory of the beloved teacher Mr Isaacs who died over the Easter break. All the money raised will go towards a bench in his honour.

At break time, Dunraven’s Reggae band (Pictured above) gave a fabulous performance of “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley and the Wailers to a crowd of over 200 students. Whilst the Reggae band performed, food played a big role with a former maths teacher who set up his own restaurants (En Root in Clapham, Brixton and Peckham) serving Plant-Based Indian Fusion Cuisine.

Leading on from that, another exciting highlight was a London Fashion Week-inspired catwalk, allowing students to exhibit their cultural attire. Taking place in the open-air auditorium the show allowed students to showcase their many different outfits and cultures. With an air of grace and bundles of confidence, students strode along the red carpet, some even wowing the audience with flips and tricks. The atmosphere was overwhelmingly positive and excited, with loads of students enjoying the day and loving a break from the day-to-day normalities of school.

Multicultural Day promotes diversity, cultural understanding and an appreciation of the many different people that make Lambeth and London such an amazing place. At a time when conflict is arising and people are fighting even more, it is these events allow us to celebrate differences and show that we can all live together.
