A Hackney man has been fined and disqualified from driving for a year after his car crashed into a cyclist in Essex but fled the scene.

Emre Kockar, 20, of Pond Farm Estate, Hackney appeared at Colchester Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (April 18) where he admitted committing multiple offences including failing to stop after a serious crash and not reporting the incident.

The crash happened on Friday (October 6) last year when Kockar’s Volkswagen Golf was seen entering the Albert Roundabout in Colchester, Essex and hitting a cyclist.

CCTV footage showed that Kockar stopped briefly after the collision before driving off.

The cyclist, a man in his 30s, had sustained a broken bone in his foot, and several cuts and bruises. His bike, valued at £11,000, was found irreparably damaged.

A probe was launched by Essex Police officers who identified the car involved. Kockar’s Volkswagen Golf was stopped by officers in Sussex the next day (October 7) who discovered that Kockar was driving without insurance and they seized his car.

The two cases were jointly presented to the court with the help of Essex Police’s specialist Road Policing Prosecutions Team.

Kockar was asked by the court to complete 250 hours of unpaid work as part of a community order during his sentencing.

He was also banned from driving for 12 months and fined £700.
