Mystery surrounds the installation of a ‘fake’ CCTV camera in Mortimer Street, Trowbridge, following a disturbance at the nearby Greyhound pub earlier this month.
Wiltshire Police, Wiltshire Council and Trowbridge Town Council all say it’s not one of theirs and the latter body has launched an investigation.
The camera was noticed after a disturbance at The Greyhound pub on Wednesday, April 10 during which police arrested three people.
It has been installed on one of the lamp posts on a corner and appeared to have been tied on with gaffer tape.
The landlord of The Greyhound pub didn’t know anything about it. One of the pub’s staff said: “I have no idea.”
A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: “This was not a camera that the police have put up.”
Cllr Nick Holder, Wiltshire Council's Cabinet Member for Highways and Street Scene said: “These CCTV cameras were not installed by Wiltshire Council.”
Town Council leader Cllr Stewart Palmen said: “I can confirm that this is not a TTC camera on Mortimer Street. We are trying to find out who’s it is.
“It looks like it’s a fake one. Highways are going to go up and take it down because it should not be there.”
