New Hope is a Watford based charity dedicated to helping the homeless or those financially unstable and/or on the verge of becoming homeless.

New Hope, previously known as Watford New Hope Trust, was founded in 1990 by two housewives, Janet Hosier and Sheila Meaning, who saw the many individuals sleeping out in the cold in front of St Mary’s Church in the centre of Watford and felt compelled to help. Entertaining Angels – their inspiring story – is available to buy here or from any of our shops.

The official launch of New Hope was on 23rd March 1990 at ‘the coaches’ – two old coaches which had been converted into soup kitchens. You can see some footage from the day - simply watch the video.

Situated on the site of an old banana factory on Whippendell Road, now the home of the Haven Support Centre, two coaches were renovated and had included new appliances, like a counter, a hob and benches. lots of volunteers served soup, drinks and sandwiches to those in need. Then, as now, there was a strong emphasis on offering friendship and support.

The Charity offers intervention, recovery and prevention services too. These also include a 24/7 service helpline, Outreach Plus and The Haven. Their recovery programmes involve emergency accommodation, recovery services accommodation, HopeCollege and Cultivate. The prevention services include tenancy sustainment team and HopeHomes.

New Hope has two locations, in Watford and Croxley Green, however is a charity dependent on the community highly.

There are also a ton of ways to get involved too!

There are many ways to donate by generally donating items, becoming a friend, donating items, alternative gifts, giving in memory, leaving a legacy and raise money as you shop.

There is also corporate and general volunteering like Breakfast at Haven, Dinner at the Emergency Accommodation, decorating, helping with their Christmas appeal and even other alternatives on their website.

Many groups of all and any ages can help them by organising fundraising events or choosing them as their charity for the year. If your group would like a talk or interactive session to support fundraising, do get in touch with New Hope!
