Greenwich Peninsula plans for 26-storey tower blocks

Greenwich Council has received plans for a set of three residential blocks including 352 new homes, including 340 new student rooms.

The project would reportedly include a self-storage unit, communal garden and a new public square with space for shops on the Boord Street site.

Residents would have access to their own gym and the two taller residential blocks in the project would also include roof terraces and gardens.

The site is based beside the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnel approaches and was previously used as the Evening Standard distribution centre.

The space sits beside where the former gasholders stood in the area and a nearby nightclub called Studio 338.

The plans, sent by Fairview New Homes, would also see 12 new flats being added to the site.

Planning documents from Allies and Morrison, on behalf of Fairview, said 35 per cent of the new homes in the project would be ‘affordable’.

The plans said: “[The scheme is] conceived as a family of buildings whose architecture reacts and responds to their specific uses and positions across the site but ultimately come together to form a single coherent piece of the peninsula.”

The new public space, known as Marsh Square, would sit at the junction of Boord Street and a new street called Marsh Walk that would arise from the project.

The street would be lined with mature trees while the square would sit beside the nursery in the scheme.

Planning documents said: “Marsh Square is a space for all, its landscape strategy weaving together different areas into an engaging new piece of the city. Nestled within the abundant planting are play spaces for children, seating for catching up with a friend, open lawn areas for relaxing, and a boules court for playing.”

The plans said ‘rigorous’ engagement meetings and workshops were held with stakeholders and planning officers to develop the scheme.

The buildings are designed with pitched roofs to appear ‘less formal’ and act as a counterpoint to other structures in the area.

The project follows a wider plan from Knight Dragon to create 17,500 new homes around Greenwich Peninsula, which the current application cited as one of the largest regeneration projects in Europe.

A development is also planned by Galliard Homes and City Developments Limited in Morden Wharf, including 12 tower blocks stretching up to 36 storeys-tall.
