Police were called to Walworth Road in Camberwell at 12.19pm yesterday (April 8) to reports of a disturbance.

A man was detained at the scene.

While police were arresting the suspect, an officer sustained a hand injury.

It is unknown how the injury occurred.

The 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

He remains in custody. No other injuries were reported, and enquiries continue.

A video shared on social media shows a man lying face down on the ground as a police officer crouches next to him.

An unmarked police car can be seen on the side of the street as a crowd gathers around the man and police officer.

Splatters of blood appear to be visible on the pavement next to where the arrest takes place.

The police officer at the scene can be heard telling colleagues that the man he is arresting has a "large machete on him".

In the video, another person can be seen stood next to the incident unfolding with what appears to be blood on his hand.

Chief Inspector Mark Kent, of the Met’s Central South Command, said: “This incident highlights the danger that our officers face every day in their efforts to keep the public safe.

“There is no place for knives on our streets.

“This is a city where millions of people live, work and raise their families.

“There is no need, and no place, for weapons such as this.

"The officer detained an armed suspect placing the safety of those at the scene ahead of his own and I commend him for his brave actions.

"Nobody should have to go to work wondering if they will finish their shift without being injured.

“Whilst the officer did require hospital treatment, I am pleased to be able to say that, on this occasion, he is expected to make a full recovery.”
