A woman in her 80s has died in hospital after being found in the River Thames in Surrey.

Police were called to reports of a person in the water at Walton Bridge at 6.40pm yesterday (April 7).

The woman was recovered and taken to hospital but she was pronounced dead shortly after.

Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.

Her death is not being treated as suspicious, but an investigation is underway to understand exactly what happened.

A grey Toyota Yaris believed to belong to the woman was also found nearby.

A spokesperson for Surrey Police said: “We are appealing for witnesses following the death of a woman who was recovered from the River Thames on Sunday, 7 April.

“Officers were called to Walton Bridge at around 6.40pm following reports of a person in the water.

“A woman in her 80s was recovered and taken to hospital but sadly died. Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported.

“At this time, we are not treating this death as suspicious, however an investigation is underway to establish the circumstances of how she came to be in the water.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and might have seen or heard anything that could assist.

“Were you in the area between 6.30pm and 6.45pm? Did you see a White woman in her 80s wearing a dark hooded puffed coat, red long-sleeved top, black leggings, and black sheepskin boots in the area?

“A grey Toyota Yaris believed to belong to her was found nearby. Did you see this being driven to the area near Walton Bridge?
