A jury has found that a 66-year-old man stabbed another man outside the Star and Garter pub in Greenwich. 

The victim was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after he was stabbed outside the Old Woolwich Road venue on August 1, 2021. 

Bernard McDonald was arrested and was later charged with grievous bodily harm and possession of a knife in a public place. 

But in February 2024 McDonald was found unfit to plead by a judge at Woolwich Crown Court. 

Subsequently, a trial of the facts was held in front of a jury who were asked to determine whether to defendant did or did not commit the offence they were charged with. 

The jury ruled that McDonald did inflict grievous bodily harm and was in possession of a knife. 

Sentencing in the case is due to take place in May 2024. 

The Star and Garter closed in August 2021 when its licence was taken away following the incident. 

Police claimed staff didn’t call them and hadn’t taken steps to prevent the incident happening. 

No working CCTV was in operation at the pub at the time. 

A new licence was granted by Greenwich Council in November 2022 and the pub reopened as the Star of Greenwich. 

It was taken over by three lifelong friends who said they were “devastated” when the pub closed but thought it was the perfect opportunity to save an important “community asset”.
