An investigation has been launched by police after possible human remains were found at a park in Croydon.

The discovery was made by police in Lodge Lane at Rowdown Fields shortly after 9am today (April 2).  

Officers will remain at the scene throughout the night to establish the circumstances of the incident.

The remains will be sent away for analysis.

Superintendent Lewis Collins said: “We are aware of the concerns within the local community following the discovery of possible human remains in the Croydon area this morning.

“The remains will be sent away for full analysis.

“I would like to reassure you that officers remain on scene and we will be carrying out a number of enquiries over the coming days to establish exactly what has happened.

“While our investigation is still at a very early stage, I would ask that people do not speculate on the circumstances and will we update you as soon as we have further information.”

A spokesperson for Metropolitan Police said: “Police were called shortly after 09:00hrs on Tuesday, 2 April to reports of possible human remains found on Rowdown Fields in Croydon.

“Officers attended and will remain at the scene throughout the night.

“We remain in contact with partners and local community members.”
