A Bexley primary school that encourages pupils to develop independence, confidence and creativity has been rated good by Ofsted.

Upland Primary School, based on Church Road in Bexleyheath, was last inspected on January 30 and 31, 2024 and the report was then published on March 19.

In the areas behaviour and attitudes and early years provision, the school was rated as outstanding.

It was rated as good in the areas of quality of education, personal development and leadership and management.

This led to an overall rating of good.

Ofsted reported that the school has high expectations of all pupils, including those with special education needs and/or disabilities and has “an ambitious curriculum for all”.

These expectations are found to translate across the school and into the early years, giving children the chance to be “exceptionally well prepared” to go into Year One.

Inspectors found that pupils at Upland Primary School are “kind, considerate and keen to learn”.

One pupil even told Ofsted: “Upland is a community where everyone supports each other”.

Ofsted went on to report that pupils are kept safe and feel comfortable speaking to a responsible adult if they have problems.

Pupils are described as “proud ambassadors” for the school who are “very enthusiastic” about their learning.

Inspectors added that pupils are “excited to learn new knowledge and they regularly try their best”.

However, in a small number of subjects inspectors did outline that teachers do not check that pupils understand some of the important things they need to know, or review what they have remembered.

This means that “occasionally”, children don’t fully understand what they have been taught.

In lessons, pupils were found to be “highly focused” and they are ready to listen to each other’s opinions and respect different points of view.

A spokesperson for Upland Primary School said: “This is a huge achievement for the community.

“As a team, we are dedicated to preparing our children for the future.

“This report highlights many great examples of how we fill our Upland backpacks.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to each and every member of the Upland school community for their invaluable contribution to this success.

“Together, we have demonstrated what can be achieved when we work together towards a shared goal.”
