A cigarette is believed to have been the cause of a fire at a 33-storey flat block on the Isle of Dogs.
The London Fire Brigade's (LFB) control office received 14 999 calls about the fire on an eleventh floor balcony in Marsh Wall yesterday (March 24).
Fire crews from Shadwell, Whitechapel, Poplar and Bethnal Green stations attended the scene at 2.29 pm and had it extinguished by 3.35pm.
Westferry Road was temporarily closed whilst emergency services dealt with the fire.
The fire brigade believes a cigarette had not been stubbed out properly before the fire started.
A spokesperson for LFB said: “If you smoke it is vitally important you stub it right out, preferably in an ashtray.
"Always ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it. If you don’t, you risk causing a fire as you don’t know what it may land on which could potentially start a fire."
No injuries have been reported.
