A Lewisham playground has been transformed to have inclusive activities for children after receiving a £155,000 investment.

Mayow Park, near Sydenham, was given the funding from NCIL (Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy), Greening Fund and Veolia to upgrade what the council describes as a “popular park”.

To launch the new playground, children were given the chance test out the new play equipment and went back to school with an Easter egg as a thank you for taking part.

The aim for the renovation was for the design to be inclusive, with something for everybody.

One of the main focuses was to encourage active movement and climbing skills with the new equipment including a wheelchair carousel, a you and me swing, a basket swing for all abilities, tactile and sensory play panels and a new tree climber and other climbing frames for different ages.

As well as the children testing this new equipment, Cllr James-J Walsh, Cabinet Member for Communication, Culture and Leisure and Cllr Susan Wise and Cllr John Paschoud, Perry Vale Ward Councillors, were also at the launch.

Brenda Dacres, Mayor of Lewisham said: “It was so lovely to see the children running around and having fun in their new playground at Mayow Park and I’m excited to see these fantastic new facilities now finished and in use!

“Thank you to all the local residents, our parks team and our partners who have helped with this project.

“Outdoor space is so vital for children and for all our residents, particularly in areas where many families do not have their own gardens.

“We have targeted Section 106 and NCIL funding to parts of our borough that need it the most.

“We hope all the children living near Mayow Park will enjoy this playground for years to come!”

Cllr James-J Walsh, Cabinet Member for Communication, Culture and Leisure said: “We are committed to continue to work with our communities to improve play opportunities for all children in the borough.

“Our ground-breaking Play Strategy is a key priority for us, improving children’s health, quality of life and well-being.

“Our award-winning parks and green spaces are vital resources to so many Lewisham residents young and old.

“We’ll continue to work with community groups to secure more future funding for further green investments across the borough, prioritising the health and wellbeing of residents.”
