A Ladywell resident is struggling to live in her own home due to a strange noise keeping her awake at night.

Marilyn Cousins, who has lived in the area for over 20 years, says she has never experienced this before and is desperate to work out what it is so that she can put an end to it.

She has described the noise as a “low frequency hum” that is “really bad at night” which started around two months ago.

Marilyn said: “We cannot find the source and wondered if any other Ladywell or Lewisham residents are hearing this.

“Younger people do not seem to pick it up, but older people do, especially if they are hard of hearing, as I am, and I hear low frequencies rather than high.”

She claims that it sounds like an industrial extractor fan, air conditioning or something else similar adding that it is a deep noise and is all on one note.

Sometimes the noise can be heard by Marilyn “non-stop” for over 24 hours, leaving her with no sleep on those nights.

But, in what Marilyn calls a “good day” it will stop for a short while.

Marilyn can hear the noise that is bothering her over her television, indoors and outdoors, even feeling a vibration through the floor and walls.

She added: “It is affecting my mental health and my ears.

“It gives me headaches, yet nobody knows where it’s coming from.

“We contacted UK power, the hospital, the train station and obviously checked out own electrics, but have drawn a blank.

“Similar hums are heard all over the country, but nobody knows what it is.

“It is hard to live in my own home.”

She asys she has found that people she knows in Sydenham and some parts of Bromley claim to have heard a similar noise, but Marilyn is searching for anyone in Ladywell having the same issue as her.

A spokesperson for Lewisham Council said: “We have not had any other reports of a low frequency hum in Ladywell.

“We don’t have any other info at the moment.”
