Smoke filled nearby streets after fire engulfed almost a whole house.

The London Fire Brigade rushed to Newick Road, Clapton, after receiving 31 calls at 12.42pm today (March 20).

Most of a terraced two-storey house, including the basement, was on fire.

Station Commander Alan Bendell warned that multiple road closures were in place and that people should avoid the area if possible.

He added: “Smoke is beginning to subside but we’d advise residents to keep their windows and doors closed for the time being.”

Lower Clapton Road was blocked both ways due to the fire, with queuing traffic in the area and several bus routes diverted.

Thick black smoke rose covered parts of Clapton, with photographs showing low visibility in the area.

The London Air Ambulance also landed near the scene while police worked to block the roads.

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters helped with the incident.

At around 3pm, the fire was brought under control – however crews remained there to dampen the scene.

The cause of the fire is not known yet, the London Fire Brigade said.
