A chemical incident at a factory in East Ham saw dozens of people evacuate the surrounding area.

A strong chemical smell was reported coming from a soft drinks factory in Roding Road last night (March 18), London Fire Brigade said.

Forty firefighters from East Ham, Plaistow, Dowgate and surrounding stations were dispatched to the scene in six fire engines.

Eighty people had evacuated the area prior to their arrival and crews got to work setting up a 100-metre hazard zone. 

A monitoring sweep was carried out but produced no elevated readings of chemical substances in the area. 

Firefighters were at the scene from 11.18pm until 2.55am (March 19).
