If you were designing a Monopoly game for Hampstead and Highgate, which iconic spots would you place on the board?
The area is known for its food and drink - anyone for a pint at The Spaniards Inn?- as well as green spaces like Hampstead Heath and Highgate Wood.
There are two Tube stations that could replace the likes of Liverpool Street and Marylebone, and even a certain local paper that might look good on Fleet Street’s orange square.
And starting from today (March 15), this fantasy game designing will no longer be a theoretical exercise.
London-based Winning Moves UK has asked the public for their suggestions about which local spots should feature on a new Monopoly: Hampstead and Highgate Edition board game.
Making the announcement was Mr Monopoly himself, who appeared not inconspicuously outside Hampstead station earlier this morning.
Two people who stopped to take a snap with the life-size character were Eyal Cohen and his son Itay.
Visiting relatives in Hendon for the day, they had just come from the Heath when they encountered Mr Monopoly in Hampstead High Street.
Eyal said that his son’s choice for a prominent square on the board would be the crêperie outside the King William IV pub.
When pushed on which of the two crêpe stands outside the pub he was referring to, he refused to be drawn on one of Hampstead’s most controversial battles; “We tried both and both are decent," he said.
Luke and Laura King, who were out in High Street with their children, agreed.
They said: “The crêperie has definitely got to be on there. The Spaniards Inn is iconic, as well as the doggy pond and the swimming ponds in the Heath.
“Golders Hill Park too – all of ours are going to be family ones!”
Another long-standing local who spotted Mr Monopoly was Brian Friedman, who was out and about with his daughter.
He jokingly suggested his own street Netherhall Gardens might make the cut, and reckoned The Bishops Avenue, aka Billionaires’ Row, would be a worthy replacement for Park Lane or Mayfair.
And amid the photo-taking and amazed onlookers, a familiar face strolled right past - none other than Sherlock and The Hobbit actor Martin Freeman.
He told Ham and High he could not stop for a chat, but said he would consider buying the new board game.
If he does make the promised purchase, Freeman might come face-to-face with some other famous names – local celebrities are set to feature on the new Chance and Community Chest cards.
Game designer John Keen-Tomlinson said that as a “Ricky Gervais fan” he would like to see the comedian on one of the cards.
But he stressed that designers would wait until the public have had their say before making any final decisions.
John added: ““There’s been lots of chat about Kenwood House and Hampstead Heath.
“But to give that really local flavour, we want to hear about the smaller bits that maybe only locals will know.
“We have a public suggestions mailbox that will be opening where people will be able to have their say.”
