An innocent man was shot once and stabbed 12 times when he and a friend were set upon by armed thugs on the hunt for opposing gang members.

Russell Jordan Jones was with friends in South Street, Enfield, in the early hours of March 17, 2018, when they were approached by a group of men wearing dark clothing and masks.

The group - armed with a sawn-off shotgun and carrying knives - launched an attack on Russell and a second man that police described as so "wicked and ferocious" it shocked hardened detectives.

Despite paramedics' efforts, Russell, 23, died at the scene after being shot once and stabbed 12 times. One of his friends also suffered a knife wound.

After an investigation that combined analysis of hours of CCTV footage with mobile phone data and one trial in which the jury failed to reach a verdict, Kyle Gordon, of Enfield, was today (Monday) found guilty of murder following a retrial.

Gordon, 24, was also found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm to a second victim, and possession of a firearm.

Detective Sergeant Joanne Donoghue, from the Met's Specialist Crime North Homicide Team, said: "On a freezing cold night in March 2018, Kyle Gordon and others armed themselves with a sawn-off shotgun and knives before setting out in search of opposing gang members.

"The group they chose were not in a gang, they were simply a group of young men chatting outside a shop.

"The wickedness and ferocity of the attack, which was captured on CCTV, shocked even the most seasoned of homicide detectives.”

Gordon had previously been tried at the same court, but the jury failed to reach a verdict on June 14, 2023.

He will be sentenced at the same court this Thursday (March 14).

Others had already been found guilty of the killing.
