A Romford takeaway has been given the lowest food hygiene rating after a recent inspection.

Cloves Indian, in Mawney Road, was visited by officers from Havering’s environmental health team on February 14 when the eatery was found to need urgent improvements.

It received a zero out of five rating and was particularly criticised for its management of food safety that ensures that the food sold or served is safe to eat.

The takeaway’s hygienic handling of food that includes preparation, cooking and storing, and cleanliness and condition of facilities was also highlighted as majorly deficient.

The rating is not a guide to food quality.

The business has operated in the area for around ten years and previously had a rating of three out of five (generally satisfactory) after its inspection in August 2022.

The Recorder has contacted the eatery for its response to the downgrade.

This comes days after another takeaway Student Biryani, in London Road in Romford, was shut to fix the issues raised by food inspectors after an inspection on February 7.

Student Biryani too was given a zero rating and is expected to be revisited by the authorities on March 13.
