Haringey is set to receive more than £1 million as London Borough of Culture.

Run by the Mayor of London, the title unlocks funding that will help the council to deliver a year of creative and cultural activities in 2027.

Haringey successfully bid for the programme under the tile ‘rebel borough’.

Council leader Cllr Peray Ahmet said the grant money would provide a fantastic opportunity to showcase the borough’s “radical heritage”.

The council has said it will bring cultural programmes into the heart of local communities, as well as utilising high-profile spaces such as Alexandra Palace and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The borough is also home to a large number of creative hubs, including Jacksons Lane and Bernie Grant Arts Centre.

Haringey will receive £1.35 million in funding, with the other winning borough, Wandsworth, receiving the same amount for 2025.

Croydon was the previous holder of the London Borough of Culture title, in 2023.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: “This prestigious award has become a cornerstone in the capital’s calendar, using the power of culture to unite communities, transform young people’s lives and boost the local economy.”

Cllr Emily Arkell, Haringey’s cabinet member for culture, communities and leisure, said: “We have really exciting plans to bring culture to every corner of our borough, providing a significant boost to Haringey’s blossoming creative sector, and supporting all of our residents to access world class cultural experiences.”

Haringey Council estimates that the programme will involve around 600 local artists and partners and see around 300,000 people participating in cultural activities.
