Photos from the aftermath of last night's huge fire at Forest Gate Police Station show devastation to the building's roof.

The Recorder has been to the scene in Romford Road this morning (March 7), where emergency services are still in attendance.

Police vans and fire engines have been spotted nearby, with one of London Fire Brigade's turntable ladders still being used to spray water at the roof.

The fire first broke out shortly after 4pm yesterday (March 6), with 30 fire engines and 175 firefighters called out to tackle the blaze.

London Fire Brigade said 60 people were evacuated from the building before fire crews arrived and there have been no reports of any injuries.

The whole of the police station's roof has been destroyed, an LFB spokesperson confirmed, with the cause of the blaze under investigation.

Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne, the brigade's incident commander, described it as a "challenging incident".

He said: "Throughout the incident a concern for our crews was the possibility of the fire spreading to adjacent properties.

"Thanks to their hard work we were able to prevent that from occurring, and the fire was limited to the police station.

"Firefighters also conducted operations to ensure that essential police property within the building remained protected from the blaze and moved to a place of safety.

"Our specialist fire investigators will now begin to carry out their investigation into the cause of the fire. Due to the scale and nature of the incident, this is may be a protracted investigation."

Road closures are still in place this morning, with police telling our reporter at the scene that Romford Road is likely to stay shut all day.

Businesses along that stretch of Romford Road near to the police station are closed this morning.

Newham MPS posted on X, formerly Twitter, last night with a quote from Commander Kyle Gordon, who said:  "I am fully aware of the impact this [the blaze] will have on our officers and staff who usually work at Forest Gate.

"Despite the impact of this fire, our ability to deliver a policing service remains unaffected.

"Our local teams will continue to serve their communities in and around Newham in their usual way and keep them safe."
