Over 82,000 made their trip to Wembley on a warm August day, to witness what would be a grand opening to the new campaign.

League champions Liverpool made the journey south with the “Lilly Whites” completing the 11 mile trip west to try and write their names on the FA Community Shield. Having won the FA Cup the previous year, Tottenham, managed by Keith Burkinshaw had won the 1982 FA Cup Final for the second season in a row.

Fans were joyous to see their teams return a week premature from the start of the First Division season where both sides would be looking for even more silverware to add to their cabinets. In the thirty-second minute, Liverpool’s number four Phil Thompson went on an adventurous run, undeterred by the task in hand he continued to charge toward Tottenham's half, but before he did he played a elegant side footed pass trough Spurs backline, finding Welsh star and club legend Ian Rush who made history as his run around goalkeeper Ray Clemence, sealed victory in the only goal of the 1982 Charity shield.

Speaking with Jamie McCreedy on his show “Inside The Mind Of” available to listen or watch on YouTube and Spotify, Liverpool’s only used substitute David Hodgson, spoke about the final Mentioning : “ I should have scored… If I was a little bit more clinical.” Signing from Middlesbrough for the highest fee in that year (£450,000) Hodgson understood that: “Only an elite few made it to the starting 12”(One substitute)  However Liverpool's number 14 was different playing thirty-seven matches recording nine goals.
