A historic pub in Dagenham could undergo a major change after a planning application has been submitted to add more hotel accommodation at the site.

A proposal to extend The Eastbrook in Dagenham Road and convert the loft has been made.

Barking and Dagenham Council has received the application, which includes an extension of up to three storeys, by architectural design company Scientific Designs.

The applicant intends to preserve the 1930s pub at the ground floor level but have plans for a partial demolition of some internal areas.

If approved, the proposals will see the ground floor undergo an extension to the rear which will be used as an extended kitchen and lobby area for the hotel.

The oak bar in The Eastbrook will be converted into a hotel reception whilst the first floor and loft floor will house 18 en-suite hotel rooms.

Scientific Designs have used a heritage consultant to provide guidance in the application stage as The Eastbrook is a Grade ll listed building. 

According to the design, planning and access statement, Historic England shared a "positive initial pre-application consultation response" to the proposal.

Two previous similar applications for an extension and loft conversion have been withdrawn.

The design and access statement said: "The proposal will have no impact on the existing building or structure’s historical or cultural significance.

"The special significance of the building will be maintained throughout the extension.

"The extension will add value to the significance of the building through high quality design and construction using traditional materials matching with the existing wherever possible. We therefore believe that this is a scheme that the council can support."

A consultation has been completed on the proposal but there is no listed date for when a decision is due to be taken.

The applicant has also submitted an application for listed building consent in relation to its plans.
