An Eltham Scout Group has launched a fundraiser to ensure that all of its members can enjoy two weekends away learning new skills and enjoying the outdoors.

The 4th Royal Eltham Scout Group is looking to sponsor two upcoming weekend camps at the Thriftwood Scout Activity Centre in Brentwood.

Founded over 100 years ago, the resilient Scout group has withstood the challenges of two world wars, the recent COVID-19 pandemic, and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

Now situated at the Coldharbour Community Hall in William Barefoot Drive, the group is on a mission to provide young people of all backgrounds with brilliant experiences.

The Thriftwood Scout Activity Centre has a range of outdoor activities such as canoeing, a climbing tower, and archery.

The 4th Royal Eltham Scout Group hopes to offer six free places on each of the two camps, scheduled for April and September.

The group has called upon the generosity of the wider community via a GoFundMe page.

They hope to alleviate the financial burden on hard-pressed families with each camp estimated to cost around £450.

The appeal aims to help accommodate between eight and 10 children on each camp, with any surplus funds directed towards enhancing the scouting experience for all participants.

Adrian Grieves, President and Treasurer and a longstanding member since 1958, told the News Shopper: "We think of the struggling families with everything that we do; the activities are subsidized.

“We try to keep things as affordable as possible.”

With six or seven leaders, around 20 Cubs, and nine Scouts, the group has been actively rebuilding since the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The reduction of subscription fees to £7 per month from £10 reflects the group's commitment to inclusivity.

Adrian said: “Unfortunately, there are too many young people going astray these days. Scouting, certainly in my view, helps them become good citizens.

“If we look back over the history of our group, we know of quite a number of people who have done very well for themselves, becoming professional individuals.”

For those eager to get involved or inquire about joining, the group welcomes visitors on Mondays during school term time or you can visit their website for more details.

There is a 6.30pm start time for Cubs and 8pm start for Scouts.
