Around 60 people evacuated their homes last night as a result of a fire that damaged half of a three-bedroom flat in Croydon.

At 10:30pm firefighters were called to the scene of a flat fire at London Road in Croydon.

60 of the residents of the seven-storey building evacuated before fire crews arrived.

The fire damaged half of the third floor flat and one person was treated for smoke inhalation by ambulance crews at the scene.

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters attended the scene with crews from Croydon, Norbury, Woodside, Mitcham, Wallington, Wimbledon and Beckenham.

The fire was under control by 10:53pm.

London Fire Brigade has said the cause of the fire is currently “under investigation“.

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said: “Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called to a flat fire on London Road in Croydon.

“Half of a three roomed flat on the third floor of a seven storey building was destroyed by fire.

“One person left the flat and was treated on scene by London Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation.

"Around 60 residents evacuated from the block of flats before the Brigade arrived.

“The Brigade was called at 2230 and the fire was under control by 2253.

“Fire crews from Croydon, Norbury, Woodside, Mitcham, Wallington, Wimbledon, and Beckenham fire stations were in attendance.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
