Hypnosis can change your life : it can improve your mental wellbeing, and help you overcome your phobias and unhealthy habits, such as smoking, over-eating or drinking too much. In contrast to many people’s perception of hypnosis, it is not a magic act and, although your session will be guided by your hypnotherapist, you remain in control.

I asked hypnotherapist, Nadine Abell, how the process actually works. “Many people have a false idea of what hypnotherapy is… they see people ‘hypnotise’ others into performing silly acts on stage, such as clucking like a chicken. However, hypnotherapy is a serious and effective therapeutic intervention that will help you improve your physical and emotional wellbeing. A good way to understand how it works is to picture an iceberg - the tip is our conscious behaviour, but it is only 10% of our mind; the part we don’t see, the other 90%, is our unconscious mind and this is where all of our impulses, deep rooted behaviours and habits reside. Hypnotherapists access the unconscious mind planting suggestions and making it so much easier to make the changes for a better and happier life. No therapy is a magic button to make problems go away but hypnosis is the closest thing to that magic button we have.”

Nadine not only has in person sessions with her clients, she also started providing hypnosis recordings during lockdown on her website, The Neuro Fix ( www.theneurofix.com ). Hypnosis downloads are a cost effective way of making hypnosis more easily accessible for people all across the world. It means everyone can benefit from the positive change it can bring to their way of life. She creates many hypnosis audios to help treat a range of things including smoking, anxiety disorders and phobias many of which she makes free of charge. She tells me that she feels the most satisfaction when her downloads make a tangible change such as when someone listens for a week and no longer suffers from a fear (like dogs or spiders or flying).

Nadine describes hypnotherapy as an ‘empowering’ therapy: “People think their emotions and thoughts just happen to them but the truth is you can have a significant influence on the way your mind works and your enjoyment of life.”

Hypnosis seems to be a way for people who have previously felt that their emotions control them to reclaim their power over their lives and live a better and happier life.
