Do you consider yourself a scientific skeptic or sceptic? Serdar, a member of the Skeptics in the Pub group, explains the distinction between a skeptic and a sceptic: “Skeptics, in my opinion, base all their knowledge on proof and scientific evidence. Approaching matters with skepticism is not refusing to believe but rather critically assess matters in a rational and evidence-based perspective.”

If you consider yourself as a skeptic, why not attend a Skeptics in the Pub event near you? Skeptics in the Pub is an informal event to encourage discussion among critical thinkers, skeptics, freethinkers, and people with similar mindsets.  Once every month, the skeptics meet in a local pub, with a different speaker discussing various topics ranging from conspiracy theories to UFOs.

The movement of Skeptics started as a debunking exercise against various claims but in time the movement has gotten into more serious topics such as alternative medicine and conspiracy theories. Although this is a social gathering which started in London in 1999, for people who are interested in philosophy, history, science, and rational thinking, it is now all around the world in various cities and countries.  However, since the pandemic many groups have stopped their regular meetings. Even the first Skeptic in the Pub event in London has now ended their gatherings.  The covid pandemic has made it challenging to find available venues for meetings causing many events to close.  This resulted in many groups organise virtual Skeptics in the pub events that are still ongoing monthly and available for anybody to join. If you want to participate in a discussion about a variety of topics, don’t miss Skeptics’ next online event, where artist and educator Stevyn Colgan will discuss witchcraft and druidism.
