Have you ever wanted to view history in the form of a gorgeous light show? The history shown this year at the St Albans Cathedral was focused on the Renaissance, a period in the early 1400s, which was a huge explosion of creativity in knowledge and art. This light show represents the coming of the modern age and what it means to be human.
The St Albans Cathedral event, Renaissance: Illuminating the Past is a beautiful light show lasting from Tuesday 24th October to Saturday 28th October, between 6pm and 9.30pm. The light show took about an hour to view, on average. It was created in partnership with artist Peter Walker and Luxmuralis.
My favourite part of the show was the projection in the entrance of the show, which displayed all the different cultures at the time of the Renaissance, from Asia to Europe, and how every culture was creating and innovating. There were no descriptions available for the artworks, so one is required to let go and simply enjoy the beauty, and interpret the art in whatever way they desire. Everybody views art differently.
There was a section on how the Renaissance brought scientific advancement, and an appreciation of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian man (which is a very famous study of the human form which is found to be perfectly proportionate when applying geometry and mathematics), and Da Vinci himself, who was a painter, sculptor, poet, architect, engineer.
You were able to write messages on peace doves at a table during the event, which will be strung together to make a beautiful sculpture. From the 3rd of January to the 13th of Febuary 2024, an innovative art installation by Peter Walker will come with an array of events surrounding the captivating centrepiece of unity.
