As not only the UK but countries across the Commonwealth gear up for the coronation next weekend, what can London expect from the celebrations?
Charles III’s coronation, as with many other royal celebrations, features an RAF flypast. This will include 6 Red Arrows, 16 helicopters and Spitfires. These will converge near London, fly over Buckingham Palace and the Mall. Some will fly south from Croydon and the Surrey Hills, and the rest will fly over West and South West London, covering both Kingston and Hounslow between 2.20 and 3pm. It seems that there will be plenty of opportunities for Londoners to spot the Red Arrows!
But not only this, many communities across London will be hosting their own street parties. Street parties are often a great way to bring the local community together, getting to know one’s neighbors in a festive atmosphere of food, drinks and music. Paul King called this a ‘lovely’ and ‘rare’ experience, that was ‘very nostalgic and reminded [him] of when he was growing up’. For him, this community atmosphere felt ‘more important than the actual coronation’. It is important to be aware, however, if you are thinking about hosting your own street party that many councils require you to fill in an application form. But this is fairly simple and can be done easily on your council’s website. If you think it may be necessary to close the street, it is necessary to contact your council at least six weeks in advance.
If you’d like to celebrate on a bigger scale there are also plenty of other events across the city. Here’s one example: The Battersea Power Station Street Party, at which Elton John and the Spice Girls will be performing, along with other entertainment including food stalls and puppet shows.
Overall, there are plenty of ways for Londoners to celebrate the coronation, whether that be witnessing spitfires fly overhead, attending your local community’s street party, or getting involved in the Battersea Power Station Street Party.
