I recently went to go see the Greek tragedy ‘Medea’ by the playwright Euripides, as part of my Classics study. ‘Medea’ is based upon the myth of Medea and Jason and their quest for the Golden Fleece. However, this productions storyline catch’s up with Medea and Jason after their famed mission with the Golden Fleece. Within this play we get told that Jason has decided to marry the daughter of the King of Creon, this angers Medea and causes her to seek revenge. This included killing Jason’s and Medea’s two sons, the new wife of Jason and the King.

This play gives insights to the views of Ancient Greeks, showing how women would be portrayed and treated in civilization, with the chorus being incorporated in the audience, this allowing us to see how audiences at the time would react to the play and the character of Medea. Medea is seen as barbaric and a dangerous person within the play suggesting to the fear Ancient Greeks would have of powerful women.

I saw this production of ‘Medea’ in Soho Place, this theatre has been designed as if we were sitting in an Ancient Greek theatre, allowing us to really engage in the show and experiences it how a Greek audience would’ve seen the show for the first time many years ago. Throughout the play all male roles are played by the same actor really supporting the theme of women empowerment and emphasising the focus on women leads. I would recommend going to watch this show if you are interested in or are studying the ancient world and classics as it gives amazing insights into Ancient Greek civilization.
