On Friday the 6th of January 2023, my school took a trip to see “A Christmas Carol” at the Old Vic. I chose to write about this as it was an inspiring and very enjoyable experience that put a slightly modern twist on an old play that still relates to our time period. As we have been studying this play during the beginning of our GCSE course, I thought it would also be a nice topic to write about as it may inspire more young people to get into theatre.

The stage used was unique in itself because of its shape. It was shaped as a plus with retractable door frames and briefcases that fit perfectly into the stage flooring. The lights below the stage shone through the rickety planks that made it up. Rob Howel was the stage designer for The Old Vic. he managed to capture so much emotion and history in the set and lighting, but how was the play adapted to this setting? This version of a christmas carol was adapted for the stage by jack thorne who carefully changed the smallest of details to huge parts of the play to make it fitting to appeal to people of our time. From the audience interaction to the individual reactions, everyone I know who has attended has thoroughly enjoyed it.

61 year old Owen Teal played ebenezer scrooge in 2023. He played the character so well it almost seemed real, he created such a nice atmosphere, we were so immersed in the show it felt like we were part of it!

Each year The Old Vic collects money for a different charity and this year they are supporting City Harvest using the money donated during the showing of “A Christmas Carol”. City Harvest helps with the redistribution of food and provides about 1.2 million meals a month!

This just goes to show how much The Old Vic is benefiting today's society, can you imagine what they will do in the future?
