Thames Water has issued an updated statement after a burst water main in Eltham.

Emergency services rushed to the scene in Eltham Road at 4.40am on January 6 to resolve the issue.

Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were called to the scene.

Six properties and Lee Green fire station were left flooded as a result of the incident.

Thames Water apologises to anyone who experienced low-pressure or no water at their homes.

It confirmed that engineers are working on repairs and expect it can take a week to complete due to the scale of the burst.

In order for the repairs to be completed safely, the A20 will remain closed for the early part of this week.

People are still being advised urged by London Fire Brigade to avoid the area following the incident.

Blackheath High School in Vanbrugh Park also announced its closure due to being affected by the flood.

In a tweet, the school said: "There is a major Thames Water flood affecting the surrounding area and our school.

“Both Junior School and Senior School have unfortunately had to close."

The school has since reopened.

There were no reports of any injuries following the flood.

The incident was over for firefighters just before 10.10am.

The full statement from Thames Water said:

“Following the burst pipe on Friday 6 January on Eltham Road in South East London, all customers should now be back in supply.

“Customers affected by the separate smaller burst pipe in Duke Humphrey Road SE3 should also now have water. We are really sorry if you have been affected by either of these incidents, we know how worrying it is to be without water.

“Our engineers are now working on repairs. We expect it to take a week to complete the work, due to the scale of the burst.

“To complete the repairs safely, the A20 will remain closed for the early part of this week. We anticipate that we will be able to open at least part of the A20 towards the middle of next week.

“We’ve been working closely with Transport for London – their latest updates on road closures in the area are available here.”
