Mohila Ongon is an organisation founded in 2010 and is based in Tower Hamlets, which serves as a support group for Bengali women who may lack this sort of support in their homes. This can be through emotionally helping women who may feel neglected at home, as well as providing a safe space for them to become more interconnected with her community.

Speaking to an active advisor of the organisation -Ayesha Chowdhury- the group strives to “make women more independent in circumstances that may affect their daily life.” She also says that “Mohila Ongon assists women from an emotional perspective, who may not understand bad home situations due to it not being talked about in their culture and background, and so may end up blaming themselves”. The group aims to educate women on how to become financially independent, as well as help them understand their importance in their households, with partners who may be more “dominating”. She continues by saying that when these women decide to participate and attend events held by Mohila Ongon “they feel safe, confident and comfortable”, further providing a community for women who may feel isolated and lonely at home.

Many times a year, Mohila Ongon will organise events, varying in scale to bring the community together. This ranges from fashion shows celebrating traditional clothing, karaoke events as well as parties where women can share food and make life-long friendships. These social events help women to feel appreciated and maintain a sense of belonging there they may have previously felt like outsiders.
