Many of us have aspiring dreams of becoming Doctors,Engineers,Lawyers etc. But are we really putting in all the extra effort to achieve this goal?

For instance, when you come back home after a long day of school, do you pick up your phone and check Instagram or do you get ready for Karate at 4? Most people would choose the first option which is disappointing. You can’t actually expect to be successful without putting any effort in.

However this is not an unfixable problem - we can all change and adapt our habits ; we just need a starting point and I can give you some help in this article.

To begin with, you should find some interests. Any activity that has a range of skills is good. For example, something manual like sewing, knitting, playing an instrument - this can help you to improve your attention to detail, precision. Something active like joining a basketball club can help you develop your physical wellbeing but also is a great way to build on teamwork skills. These activities can allow you to take a break from studying, or using your phone and it can also be a great way to build upon your skills.

For those looking to further expand their extra-curricular activities, you could always look into Army,Air or Sea cadets. They are amazing organisations and they can provide you with endless opportunities (check their websites for more information and to find your local detachment). St John Ambulance is also another opportunity which you should lookout for (especially those who are looking into medicine).

Most schools also offer the DofE. This is a fun way to combine skills, physical and volunteering in one. There are 3 stages - Bronze,Silver and Gold. At the end of each course you are greeted with the camping experience.

Now, this article isn’t forcing you to stop your pleasures but to instead balance your timetable and pick up opportunities which will later help you not only in life but also in your CVs,personal statements etc - the clubs you attend now, the effort you put in now, the skills you enhance now will be so beneficial in the future.
