Camden Council has condemned “reckless” intruders who allegedly climbed scaffolding and got onto the roof of a 22-storey tower block.

Police were called to the Chalcots estate on Thursday night (December 1), after intruders reportedly blasted loud music from the top of the Bray building on the Chalcots estate.

“This was a reckless act by all involved, who scaled the security fence erected at this location to protect residents, visitors and those working on the building,” said Camden Council.

The buildings are covered in scaffolding ahead of remediation works, after a litany of fire safety hazards were uncovered in the wake of the 2017 Grenfell Tower disaster.

The Metropolitan Police Service confirmed that it had been called to the estate, on Fellows Road in Swiss Cottage, at 9.27pm, over “reports of a public nuisance on a building roof”.

Camden Council said the incident was reported to police by its own out-of-hours staff.

“Council security promptly reported the unauthorised access of the scaffolding at Bray block by a group of individuals to the police,” a spokesperson said.

“The individuals had left before the police attended.”

A Met spokesperson said: “Officers carried out a search of the premises with the security team and nothing was found."

In a letter to residents on Friday, the council said the roof had since been checked again and no evidence was found of any disturbance.

The roof hatch was secured in the usual way.

Nigel Rumble, an elected member of Bray’s Tenants Representatives Association, said he happened upon the incident as he arrived home from a work gathering at about 9.45pm.

“As I was approaching Bray I saw blue flashing lights. There were three police cars there,” he said.

“I said: ‘Oh my goodness, what’s going on?’

“They said they had received telephone reports that there had been people on the 22nd floor scaffolding and people were on the roof.

“They were playing very loud music on the roof of the building and people were seen on the scaffolding, climbing up.”

CCTV cameras are now to be installed on the roof – something Stephen Lawson, Bray TRA chairman, welcomed.

He said he had previously suggested installing cameras on the roof.
