The month of November has been a busy one at City of London Freemen’s School, with a wealth of events being hosted over the course of the month.

The most notable of these started the month off with a bang, with a fun-filled event hosted for parents and students; a firework display was held in the lead up to Guy Fawkes night.

The event kicked off at 19:20, however visitors began pouring in just before 18:00, with the treat of viewing the Freemen's architectural landscape illuminated by large, portable lights as well as the toasty glow of the ‘Main House’ ‘s various rooms.

Against this backdrop, black tents could be seen set up, with the Sodexo catering team providing a variety of barbecued foods and cold beverages. The school’s boarding population received priority and had already enjoyed an evening meal before visitors began to arrive.

The area soon became a scene of parents and students socialising on the lawns surrounding the school’s Main House , with a spattering of coloured luminescence spread throughout the crowd, on account of glow-in-the-dark merchandise (a range, including balloons, glow sticks and light-up bunny ears) and fingers sticky from glazed donuts.

In the case of hot beverages and product stalls, student representatives from the Sixth Form in school garb aided in serving drinks to visitors and selling merchandise. The proceeds from the food and merchandise sales went towards reinvestment in the school, with the intent of improving the experience of school staff, students and their needs.

Following some time spent in growing anticipation, a colourful display began over the school’s smaller football and cricket grounds, with red, golden, green, pink, blue and yellow hues. The visual value was just as magnificent as the display of the previous year, however included a new feature; a musical accompaniment! Instrumentals included soundtracks from popular films, such as Jurassic Park, Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean. Georgina Farrington, a politics teacher at Freemen’s, said of the display,“ The music added to the atmosphere, and they were just very nice fireworks".

With the display over, the evening drew to a close, and the crowd fanned out over the space of the coming 45 minutes.

As the crowd fanned away, the remnants of the evening were candy floss tins, Krispy Crème donuts, and the odd pair of glowing bunny ears! Hannah Jurers, an U6 student summed up the it up well: “ It was chaos. The candy floss was very popular.”

This fun-filled event provided some much needed warmth as the season's temperament becomes ever chillier.
