An illegal waste vehicle was seized in Abbey Wood and has now been crushed after failing to comply with environmental legislation.

The vehicle was apprehended in Harrow Manorway on June 20, 2022, having been transporting waste with the correct motor vehicle insurance and a valid Waste Carrier Licence.

The seizure of the vehicle was a collaborative effort between Bexley Enviro-Crime Officers and Sidcup and Thamesmead Policing Safer Neighbourhoods Team.

The vehicle was seized and later crushed under Section 5 Control of Pollution (Amendment) Act 1989 and Section 35B of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 making it an offence to transport waste without the authority do so.

Cabinet Member for Places, Cllr Peter Craske said: “Experience shows us that vehicles like these, that are not complying with the requirements of Environmental legislation, are actively involved in the illegal depositing of waste.

“Like others who take pride in the area, we’re fed up with seeing our Borough being ruined by a small minority of people, who think they can try and dump waste illegally and with no consequences.

“Action like this shows there are serious consequences for those involved.

"We will continue to work with our partners to tackle this kind of behaviour.”
