The Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) in London is set to expand to its biggest size yet, covering all of London including Sutton.

From the 29th of August 2023, vehicles not meeting emission standards will be required to pay the £12.50 ULEZ charge every day (except Christmas Day) to significantly reduce the pollution in London’s air.

The scheme was first introduced in 2019, but the boundary expanding in 2023 will impact many more drivers, forcing some to consider changing to less polluting vehicles. Currently, it is thought that somewhere around 200,000 vehicles will face the ULEZ charges next year. Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, explained the expansion will improve air quality in London to protect people of all ages’ health. However, the scheme has been criticised as a Transport for London (TfL) survey found 80% of people in impacted areas have opposed the planned expansion.

Sadiq Khan described expanding the ULEZ zone to include all of London as, “one of the toughest decisions I’ve taken.”

Many have felt strongly opposed as people are already struggling through the cost of living crisis and the financial strain of these charges mean that some won’t be able to afford to drive their cars. There are also concerns over its negative impact on local shops, especially in Sutton, because people outside London may be less likely to travel into the zone to avoid having to pay. This comes at a time when the high street is already struggling.

In the current zone, the low-emissions have been effective at cutting carbon dioxide emission by 5%, nitrogen oxide by 54% and particulate matter by 45%. This all contributes to improving the air quality in London.

While the expansion of the ultra-low emission zones will improve air quality and health, it is a controversial scheme because of its high charges and potential impact on local shops.
