Old Georgians’ Hockey Club, founded in 1995 in Weybridge, has always been a wholesome club that prioritised the enjoyment of hockey. Whilst it began with the aim of bringing together Old Georgians who wanted to continue playing hockey after their days at school, it has since developed into a top tier club, with the Men’s 1st Team being promoted into the National Premier League in 2019 and winning the league a mere 3 years later, in 2022.

The Club was kickstarted by 3 Old Georgians and began with the aim of one day becoming a National League Club. It achieved this goal in 2003 when it joined the National League in Division 2. But the Club’s achievement doesn’t stop there; just 6 years after OGHC was founded, in 2001 the Ladies section was set up. By 2021 the Ladies 1s had reached the Southeast Premiership League, after 7 years of consecutive promotions, and so far in the 2022-23 season they have won all of their first 8 games in this league. This level of success is demonstrated throughout the club, with both the Ladies 3s and 4s and the Men’s 1s, 2s, 3s and the Men’s Phoenix Over 50s teams remaining at top of their league tables so far this season.

In an interview with James Albery, the Men’s 1s captain and GB international, he expressed that “although there’s been a lot of success in recent years, this isn’t a newfound thing. The vision of this club has been there since the start” with there always having been “a very clear plan of how they were eventually going to get to the top, bringing in certain players along the way but also trying to create some of their own success”. When asked what he felt was unique about Old Georgians, Albery stressed the sense of family at the club, articulating that “every member of Old Georgians would say that it’s a family. Not just a family club, but a family of people”. This definitely rings true, with crowds of families and friends gathering on weekends to watch teams play, and children being able to play for the junior section, ‘The Dragons’.

Albery described that the Men’s 1s next goal during this season is “hopefully to win the outdoor championship” and mentioned that this season their team has been promoted into the top indoor hockey league. He expressed that it’s a goal to make it to the final’s night, stating “I know the club would really get behind us, and hopefully we could put on a bit of a show at finals night if we get there”.

With OGs currently playing at the ‘top of their game’ they are undoubtedly ones to watch in the upcoming months, and even years.
