On Sunday the 27th of November, Epsom Clocktower was surrounded by swarms of people, Christmas stalls, games and rides. Then, at half past four, with the crowd waiting with excitement, the Mayor of Epsom and Ewell, Clive Woodbridge, switched on the christmas lights that would brighten Epsom's town centre.

The event started at 11 a.m, with a diverse crowd of all ages attending, whether it was people stopping by on their Christmas shopping errands, or families come for an enjoyable day out. Rides for children such as the tea cups and the carousel were free with the option of a donation, becoming a quick favourite, with queues of families waiting to ride. There was also a fun house and a ferris wheel, which rivalled the iconic Epsom Clocktower in height.

A variety of food stalls were avaliable, with mulled mine and mince pies quickly appearing in the hands of adults and candy floss and pop corn being shared between children. The smell of Greek Souvlaki, burgers and hot dogs wafted amongst the crowd, whilst entertainers dressed as fun-loving elves roamed the street.

The crowd began to increase in size with the lights being turned on approaching, and at 3:45 the Laines Theatre Arts' students took to the stage. A choir performed a medley of christmas songs, followed by an impressive tap dance routine that elevated and exctied the audience. The cast of Epsom Playhouse's upcoming pantomime, Dick Whittington, then took to the stage, singing Christmas carols and engaging the crowd in pantomime skits.

At 4:30 the cast was joined on stage by the Mayor of Epsom and Ewell, who, once having thanked the performers and organisers of the event began the count down to the lights turning on. The large crowd surrounding the stage joined in as a 10 second count down ensued, echoing down the highstreet, the lights then came on to shouts of excitement and awe as the Epsom Clocktower was lit up.

Despite the weather consisting of patterns of rain, Epsom residents did not shy away from getting involved and having a good time at what was an overall enjoyable event.
