Little free libraries are popping up everywhere from small towns and villages to city suburbs and in local communities such as Cobham and Weybridge.
What are little free libraries? Little free libraries are mini book exchanges where people can go to give a book they no longer need and swap it with one they would like to read. Some are created by the community but many of them are initiated by LittleFreeLibrary, an organisation wanting to provide access to books in as many neighbourhoods worldwide as possible, wanting to help influence literacy outcomes and strengthen communities. These little free libraries can be found all over the place, in all shapes and sizes, in old telephone boxes or small wooden structures. They usually hold a wide range of books for all ages.
These little libraries are great for the community as they give people access to books for free. This is especially important as books are becoming more and more expensive, and therefore reading for leisure, for some might be seen as a luxury. Little libraries also help a community to share their favourite books and give recommendations. Little Libraries are appealing to all ages, encouraging people to expand and share their love for reading.
