Adopting a furry friend is a momentous decision. In some cases, your pet may live upwards of 20 years. In this case, you’ve narrowed the search to dogs and cats. How should you choose between man’s best friends?

Although both dogs and cats are proven to help their owners deal with stress and loss, they are very different. A dog requires a lot of stimulation, fresh air and regular walks. This is great if you are an energetic person, and have a garden to let your dog run about in. Not so great if you are apartment-bound, however. Unlike cats, dogs aren’t solitary animals, and can greatly suffer if you work long hours or have a very demanding job.

If you want a more independent pet, or have limited indoor space, or a busy lifestyle, a cat might be more suitable for you. Cats are usually happy to entertain themselves for much of the day, but still require affection and grooming. If you plan on spending a long time away, you do still need to find a neighbour who is willing to check on your cat, or check them into a cattery where they will be taken care of.

As well as this, there are many breeds of dogs, which you need to keep in mind when choosing a potential companion. They range in temperament, as well as physical aspects. Nonetheless, if you have the space and time, you’ll find a pet who is a faithful life-long companion.

In many cases, if you are able to have multiple pets, it may be beneficial to have cats and dogs. With some time and effort, any pets can become the best of friends!
