For the opening night of Strictly Ballroom on November 7th, I was provided the opportunity to attend this exciting new musical based off the iconic 1992 Australian romcom which has been adapted by Britain's beloved TV judge, Craig Revel Horwood. Touring around the UK and Ireland until July 2023, Strictly Ballroom stars Strictly Come Dancing favourite- Kevin Clifton and Eastenders Actress- Masie Smith.
The musical follows rebellious ballroom dancer- Scott Hastings- in his daring journey of discovery. Together with beginner dancer- Fran- they must learn that dancing doesn't need to be strictly ballroom.
Immediately upon starting, the stage is filled with electrifying lights which are followed by even more vibrant and dynamic dresses. This entrance rapidly caught the audiences' attention, especially as this was all accompanied with powerful music.
This intense nature of the show carried on throughout, with plenty of sentimental solos and passionate duets between our leading couple, sending out hearts soaring and leaving us praying for the best outcome; there is no room for disliking the protagonists here as we wish to watch them achieve something incredible. When these characters come together, they create a show which is compelling and uplifting through not only the dancing but the love story as well.
Moreover, to answer any concerns on Kevin Clifton's acting abilities a member of the audience stated that: "Having seen Kevin as a dancer on Strictly Come Dancing, I was unsure whether or not he would be a good live performer, but his stage presence was above and beyond expected!"
Not only did I enjoy this musical, but the theatre itself is fantastic. The intricate details along the walls, the sophisticated paintings on the ceiling, and the complex gold railings all create an unforgettable, luxurious atmosphere. Even without any actors on, the stage is beautiful and the props on it are carefully thought out.
Without a doubt, I would recommend this musical to anyone looking for a show to watch soon!
