On the 25th of October, Liz Truss handed over her resignation to King Charles III. A few minutes later, Rishi Sunak was accepted to be prime minister by the same person. In this year, we have seen two prime ministers resign from their position, both from the Conservative party and now we have Rishi Sunak, the new PM, formally Chancellor of the Exchequer to Boris Johnson and after that lost in the run to be prime minister against Liz Truss, who was in office for 50 days, breaking the record for the shortest serving PM of British history. But now Rishi Sunak is in power, he has to prove to the public that he is capable of serving longer than Liz Truss and do a better job than her. But people are sick and tired of the Conservative party’s façade, from Partygate to Kwasi Kwarteng’s choice to implement the mini budget, from the advice of his peers, resigning a few days later. People want change, and if the Conservative party isn’t going to change, then maybe there should be a general election.

So why should there be a general election? Because the people should be given a chance to decide if the Conservative Party is still to govern the whole country or if it should put in the hands of a different party, like Labour. Unless a general election is called, there won’t be one until January 2025. That’s nearly three years that the Conservatives could govern for, whether it be Rishi Sunak or someone else. And with the number of failures we’ve had from the Conservatives, a general election is in order.

But some people say that there is no point in having a general election, seeing that the next one is only in three years, and Rishi Sunak has only been in office for less than a week, and we should give him a chance to prove that he can govern properly. Furthermore, Rishi Sunak introduced the Furlough Scheme, which was greatly appreciated by many smaller businesses, as the employer was able to cover the majority of people’s salaries, which saved them from going into administration. Also, Rishi Sunak was leading the race to becoming the next prime minister before Liz Truss became PM.

Overall, I don’t think that there should be a general election because we should Rishi Sunak the chance to prove himself in office, and people should put aside what the other prime minister’s let-downs, and focus on the path ahead, especially in the state of the economy due to the coronavirus and many other factors.
