Part of Camden High Street may soon be pedestrianised - with a trial set to start next year.

Camden Council proposes closing the high street between the tube station and Hawley Crescent to vehicular traffic as part of moves to increase walking and cycling in the borough.

The plans are set to be discussed at a culture and environment scrutiny committee on November 10.

The idea to pedestrianise the area on some weekends was first mooted in 2019.

Full details of which days pedestrianisation will be in operation in the proposed scheme are not yet known.

Cllr Adam Harrison, cabinet member for a sustainable Camden, said in 2019:  “I am particularly excited at the prospect of trialling giving over to pedestrians the section of the High Street between Camden Town tube station and Hawley Crescent.

"This would free it from motorised traffic on selected weekends, and we are currently assessing this.

“Camden High Street experiences high levels of traffic, with busy pavements, meaning that visitors, residents and businesses are exposed to crowded footways and high levels of vehicle emission pollution. This trial pedestrianisation will provide everyone with the chance to experience this iconic part of the borough without these issues.”

The meeting will discuss the progress in delivering the Camden Transport Strategy since its adoption in April 2019.
