Korhlay, deriving from the Krio word to admire something beautiful, exudes the brilliant ingenuity of its creator, Mariama Kargbo.

Korhlay fashion: a modern brand delivering the timeless vibrancy of Sierra Leone to England. Credit for this striking initiative must go to the innovator/ designer Mariama Kargbo. A Sierra Leonian herself, the utilisation of African fabrics had always occurred to her. Their striking colours and print repeatedly cropped up as Korhlay’s selling point. Yet, Mariama keenly emphasised the individuality of the brand, not only in what it offers, but in its attitude to fashion. “I believe each client has their own identity” she says. Fashion is not a one size fits all. “Unique value” is added in considering which designs would complement which individuals and it adds a personable layer to Mariama’s brand.

Typically, Mariama begins the process of developing a piece with earthy colours. Creating pieces is like completing a puzzle. Shades and tints are subsequently added, drawn out by the base and each print tailored to each client. The most rewarding part about Korhlay is, of course, the audience. Client interaction is key. A background in retail has given Mariama the skills to easily foster relationships, ensuring clients leave feeling empowered and that Korhlay is “more than just clothes.” An element of mutual satisfaction appears: the client is pleased and so, in turn, is Korhlay. Growth is another fundamental value. The brand’s creation cannot be described by Mariama as smooth sailing, but Korhlay is contemporary. Mariama aims to stay optimistic, continuing to further it as a progressive brand.

The opportunity to display the Korhlay & Sierra Leone colours has arisen many a time, especially in the form of London Fashion Week. An incredible moment, but even so Mariama stressed the importance of never losing sight of one’s background. LFW was a good challenge but remembering your culture and colours are key: “they are all part of your brand identity”. Be ready, Mariama says. Opportunities are coming your way.

It is vital that Korhlay looks ahead in a constantly evolving world. The largeness of the Korhlay heart is more than evident. Mariama’s self-confessed biggest dream is to be a “positive influence” on the next generation. She described the younger generation as the “future” and wants to ensure that they are able to “learn from my pitfalls”. A generous sentiment from an accomplished designer. Korhlay has held multiple fashion shows and charity events, enabling them to give back to the community and still the future appears even brighter. Mariama plans to focus her attention on streetwear while retaining the vivid essence of her brand. The pandemic inspired this initiative, highlighting the importance of comfortability and a broadening of clientele is always welcome.
