In this day and age, volunteering for your local community has become more beneficial than ever. So I decided to interview a secondary school student who is already leading by example and inspiring others-her name is Lila Martinez.

How do you volunteer for your local community?
Every Friday for one hour, I volunteer in my local Oxfam charity shop where I sort through donations, work the till, stock shelves, and price items such as books and CDs.

Why did you decide to volunteer at an Oxfam Charity shop?
My decision to volunteer at the Oxfam charity shop comes from my belief that Oxfam does crucial work to help the poor. By volunteering in my local charity shop, I believed I could benefit a good cause while at the same time strengthening my organisation skills and my social skills which I aimed to improve. Through the development of these skills, I can obtain experience for future jobs that require teamwork and a retail background.

Do you like volunteering at Oxfam?
I enjoy working at Oxfam because it provides me with a sense of responsibility and commitment. It also gives me a new found appreciation for how much work goes into 'behind the scenes' of a charity shop. Additionally, it provides you with the opportunity to meet new people, which is always very fun. Also it is rewarding, to help others in need as it makes all your hard work worthwhile.

Would you recommend volunteering at an Oxfam Charity shop to others?
I would definitely recommend it to others because it provides a good way to socialise and engage with other people. Also, this volunteering role has a very flexible schedule so anyone can do it. Finally, giving back to others brings a sense of joy and happiness to your life.

I hope this inspired you to get involved with your local community and follow in Lila's footsteps. If it be volunteering in a charity shop or not, volunteering in general is always crucial and beneficial.
