Haringey Borough: the local team who are so much more than ‘just a bus stop’

Situated at Coles Park and described by fans as ‘the real team on White Hart Lane’, Haringey Borough FC is the local Tottenham team bringing the community together.

This Saturday, Haringey beat Folkestone Invicta with an impressive 3-0 victory. Starting strongly, centre forward Alphanso Kennedy slid in a cross from the right just 2 minutes in. An uneventful first half followed but the second half saw Haringey dominate.

An own goal put them 2-0 up before the highlight of the match. Central defender Jorge Djassi-Sambu won the ball in his own half, ploughed forward and lashed it into the bottom left hand corner, causing a minor eruption in the small stand.

The fans have to be credited for making the match such an enjoyable experience, their creativity evident throughout the plethora of chants and their dedication admired, with one fan only missing one home game in four years.

So what appeals to the more than 500 fans who turned up to watch a game in the seventh tier of English football?

For many, it's not just the football but the atmosphere and sense of community, with one fan, Kevin Mayor commenting that it’s about ‘getting back to the game before it was destroyed by commercialism’. Another, Peter Pinto De Sar added how ‘You want to see Haringey do well but I'm not sure I’d want to see them in the Premiership as you’d lose a lot of what the magic is about coming here”.

The feeling of getting back to the heart of football and reminding people why they fell in love with the game in the first place is why so many spend their Sunday afternoons here, at what they affectionately call “just a bus stop in Tottenham.”
