Three days in the Big Apple

Recently having experienced the sights of New York on a school trip for History and Politics, I was revealed to the true underlying beauty of the city. Visiting sights such as the Empire State Building to the Hard Rock Café, New York ceased any childhood expectations. A friend and student, Chloe Royle, who came on the trip commented that she was ‘stunned by the impressive sights throughout the trip’.

One of the most breath-taking experiences from the trip was visiting the Empire State Building at night. Looking over the vast, lit up view encompassed the sheer beauty and life the city holds. Almost making me feel tiny amongst a city bursting with life. The impressive architecture was not the only one we witnessed during the trip, the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge were equally as stunning.

Approaching the statue of liberty by ferry, I was astonished by the remarkable view. As a statue that is recognized across the globe, it was a surreal moment seeing it with my own eyes rather than through a screen. The statue, once a copper colour, has turned green from weathering which gives it a stunning finish. A figure that truly represents freedom and hope.

However, the true New York experience came from seeing Times Square and visiting classic shops and restaurants. Visiting Times Square at night, it was illuminated with dozens of screens, crowded with bustling tourists and exactly what I expected. Nether the less, it did not disappoint. Gift shops and American restaurant chains lined the edges of Times Square, it was like something out of a movie (or a film as the Brits would say). Central Park came with stunning views and beautiful nature. After watching a live band, we strolled through the park with a pretzel in hand.

As a politics student, visiting the United Nations headquarters was the most interesting part of the trip. The heaven for anyone studying politics, the tour guide talked us through the different parts of the organization. Inspired by this visit, it made me begin to question and look into my own future career choices.

One experience that touched me greatly was visiting the 9/11 memorial, an experience that cannot be described with words. A memorial put together so thoughtfully; it was an honour to see. The beautiful pools of water along with the museum were touching to witness.

All in all, as a childhood dream of mine, New York was all I wanted and expected it to be. The Big Apple; a place of liveliness, adventure and brilliant architecture.
