32-Year-Old Singer Songwriter, Taylor Swift, breaks record after record after releasing her 10th album ‘Midnights’ on Friday at 5AM GMT (Midnight EST).

Taylor Swift is an extremely successful artist known for striking and delicate lyrics and in depth storytelling interwoven into her songwriting. With a discography of 10 albums (+2 rerecordings!) Taylor has built up a worldwide fanbase of over 229 MILLION (yes, you heard correctly, million) followers on Instagram alone. Swift is well known for pursuing a large variety of genres throughout her career, including country, pop, folk and more, meaning that it was a very much guesswork to fans what genre the new album was going to be.

Swift’s all encompassing success is proven through the records her new album has broken (only a few days after its release!), not only on streaming services such as Apple Music and Spotify, but through vinyl sales and charts such as the Billboard Hot 100. On its release day, ‘Midnights’ became Spotify’s most streamed album in a single day, and simultaneously, Swift herself became the most streamed artist in a single day. Taylor Swift is predicted to occupy all of the top 10 spots on the Billbord Hot 100 at the same time, being the only artist in history to do so.

This album is unlike any of her past albums, in the way that it is her first fully autobiograhical album since her 2019 pop record ‘Lover’, as 2020 sister albums, ‘folklore’ and ‘evermore’ are largely storytelling albums. In an interview talking about the writing process of ‘folklore’ and ‘evermore’ Swift refers to creating “characters in this mythological American town” and how that inspired her to stray from her usual “diaristic” approach to songwriting. Another thing about this album that sets it apart from work in the past is that it is telling ‘the story of 13 sleepless nights’ scattered throughout the star’s life, as opposed to being a snapshot of only one particular period, as many of her past albums were.

‘Midnights’ is already turning out to be massive fan favorite, as shown by the record breaking response globally.
