Behind an innocuous shopfront at Westfield shopping centre lies a world where you can fly over volcanoes, and cower underwater from a vicious T Rex.
All it involves is donning a VR helmet and entering a 'playzone'. With the help of some clever software, your senses are tricked into thinking a room boasting geometric shapes, a vibrating floor, and a wind machine is a portal into the age of dinosaurs.
Once in the game, we pointed and laughed at our suited avatars; futuristic scientists wearing backpacks labelled with our names. There are no handsets; you are briefed at the start that touching objects in the game - a bone, a feather, a pair of binoculars - collects points and knowledge to help recreate an unknown dinosaur species.
We travelled on a vertiginous lift, stepped through the portal, and whirled through a time tunnel back 80 million years to the cretaceous period. The immersive nature of the game means you can look up, down, and all around as you start collecting scientific data on prehistoric insects, flora, droppings and footprints. There's a hatching egg, gushing waterfall, and stunning vistas over plains of greenery-chomping Alamosours.
Instructions are relayed via the headset as you enter a flooding cave, have a terrifying brush with the Rex, and board an exhilirating ride over roiling volcanoes, through canyons, and under a giant beast. It really feels as if you're flying.
At the end of the 25 minute game, players can compare scores and see how much data they collected. We emerged breathless, a little dizzy, and in need of a pitstop at Five Guys next door.
The Scandinavian geniuses behind the experience formed in 2018 to take VR to the next level. They specialise in developing non violent puzzle-based interactive entertainment and have have previously run The Golem in Prague, which immerses players into the medieval city.
Meet the Dinosaurs is perfect family fun from young to old. Slightly older players will enjoy a new escape room style adventure coming to Westfield in January that involves fighting your way out of a secret underground lab.
